SpacerHistory of Scrapbag Quilters

"One yard of fabric, like one cookie,
is never enough."
--Pat Mendygral-Kibble,
Founding President

A club of interested quilters was started in Pat Mendygral's kitchen with just a few members. Pat says, "I had retired in 1998, and in 1999, I took a beginning quilting class in Rockford. I enjoyed quilting soooooooooooooooo much, I thought maybe there were other people here at the Lake that might quilt, too. So I put a letter in the Lake Summerset News asking anyone who was interested in quilting to please call me. We met in my house and knocked the idea around about meeting once a month at the Lodge. And so it happened."

The first "official" meeting was on Sept. 20, 2001 at the Lake Summerset Lodge with 20 members in attendance. The members were Pat Mendygral, Sharon Hunter, Carol Rosko, Betty Schumacher, Ramona Kuntzelman, Judy Stretch, Marlene McCarter, Jean Brogan, Gail Hunt, Donna Kinczewski, Nonine Larson, Jane Carl, Lorraine Hahn, Ginger Carlson, Nancy Collati, Bonnie Edwards, Alison Board, Linda Moll, Lois Leahy, and Lou Ann Earsley. Most of whom are still members today.

Our first charity project was blocks for the World Trade Center quilts.

The club still had no official name at that time. We finally chose the "Scrapbag Quilters" name in March of 2002.

On June 20, 2002 the Club took our first road trip shop hop to Beloit, WI, and Roscoe, IL with lunch at the Elderberry Tea Room in Roscoe and then back to the Lake.

Our first Lake Summerset Summerfest quilts were rag quilts for children and a patriotic star quilt.

By July 2002 our club had grown to 30 members.

Our first baby blankets for St. Anthony's Pediatric Ward were done in October of 2002 with a workshop at the Lodge. 37 blankets were made and donated.

In December of 2002 we held our first quilt show at the Lodge and it was a great success.
